Save Water and Save Money this Summer

Categories:Tips & Tricks

Thankfully, the Nashville, TN area doesn’t have to worry about being in a drought this summer. While we don’t necessarily have to worry about saving water, we should still be water conscious. Not only is it good for the environment, it’ll also save you money. So besides taking shorter showers and using recycled water to wash your car, how can you save water? There are a few things you can easily do around the house, and if you give us a call, there are a few ways Advantage Plumbing can help you cut back on water usage too – without you even realizing you’re conserving.

Here are 5 tips to help you save water this summer:

1. Stop Leaks

Whether it’s your faucet or your toilet, the smallest of leaks can really add up to a big waste of water. A leaky faucet can waste up to a gallon of water a day! Check the faucet head as well as the base for any dripping. Toilets can be harder to catch, but it’s worth taking a look – a leaky toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water a day! Make sure you also check washers, outdoor water hoses and water heaters for any leaks. If you find a leak, or aren’t even sure if you have one, give us a call and we’ll get everything sorted out for you.

2. Switch to Low-Volume or Low-Flow

The good news is that if you have a newer toilet (“new” being anything made after the 1990s), you’re probably already operating a low-volume toilet. The newer ones are designed to use less water (about half) than older models for flushing. You should also consider installing water-saving faucets and shower heads. Today, many of these fixtures are designed to maintain good pressure while still saving water, so it’s win-win (and a win for your wallet as well).

3. Switch Your Water Heater

One thing Advantage Plumbing really specializes in is water heater installation and maintenance. There are plenty of different kinds of water heaters and many of them have benefits that lead to saving water. Instant water heaters, for example, make it so you don’t have to run water while waiting for it to heat up.

4. Only Operate Full Loads

Don’t run your washer or dish washer unless you can do so on a full load. Regardless of whether you’re washing five dishes or 20, the machine will use the same amount of water for each cycle. If you wait to run it until it’s full, you’ll run it less and save more. Same goes for (clothing) washing machines.

5. Practice Water Conservation Habits

Isn’t that what all the above are? Well, yes. But in addition to the above, make sure you’re not blatantly wasting water while going through your daily routine. Shut off the faucet while you’re brushing your teeth. Try not to contemplate the entire meaning of life while in the shower, keep them short. Don’t water the lawn in the middle of the day, wait until evening so the water doesn’t evaporate.

While you can tackle some of these tips yourself, give Advantage Plumbing a call at (615) 781-1239 or send us a message and we’ll take care of the rest. If you’re in Nashboro Village, Mount Juliet, Franklin or any other Nashville suburb, we’ll help you save money by saving water.
